Roslyn Hartwig - Artist & Tutor
I am on a quest for excellence.
My inspiration comes from various aspects of the world around me, as I set out to capture the intimate beauty of nature which for me, reveals the personal interest that God has in all of us. It is the textural component of the landscape that intrigues me most and I attempt to incorporate this in each painting, while also using tone, form and colour – both bright or muted as appropriate – to depict an enhanced realism of each subject.
I seek to give my audience a sense of peace and contentment that replaces, if just for a while, the hardship and distress that are often a part of life. My goal is to open the eyes of those who view my artwork to the endless variety of possibilities for enjoyment in our surroundings - whether it be the city or country area where we live; in our own backyards or places that we visit. Through painting and teaching, I endeavour to reflect the heart of God – to show the beauty, peace and rest of nature in it's many forms.
An interest in creativity has been present since childhood, though it was 1998 before I started painting, beginning with pastels, soon adding watercolours and now also oils. Drawing as often as possible, I work en plein air in watercolour, pen and pencil. Painting on location challenges me to depict not only what is actually there, but also to express it in a way that shows the intangible character of the subject.
At present, I work full-time at Murray’s Art and Framing, where I provide service and advice on art materials and framing . I teach lessons in watercolour, holding day and night classes during school terms. I also conduct weekend workshops in other areas, when approached.
“I believe that art has a divine source and lives in the hearts of all men who have been touched by the heavenly light. Once having tasted the delights of great art , one is inescapably and forever dedicated to it” Paul Gauguin 1848-1903
